Printable Sudoku
The grid below is an ordinary table of characters, which is the whole reason it prints well: your browser can put it on paper directly, with no download, no plug-in and no PDF in between. Print it, press New puzzle, print again, and the second sheet carries a completely different board - generated on the spot and checked for a single solution, like every other puzzle on this site.
What makes a sudoku printable is that it is text
Most puzzle sheets on the web are pictures, or PDFs wrapping pictures, and a picture has one resolution and one size. This grid is a table with a digit in each filled cell, so the printer renders the numbers with its own type at its own resolution. It comes out sharp at any paper size, it enlarges cleanly for anyone who wants a big-print grid, and there is no file left in your downloads folder afterwards.
Printing it
Use the browser’s own print command – Ctrl+P on Windows and Linux, Cmd+P on a Mac, or Print from the browser menu on a phone or tablet. Nothing has to be installed and no button on the page is involved. The same command offers Save as PDF on most systems if you want a file rather than paper.
Six different sheets, one after another
A printable sudoku is normally a file somebody prepared months ago and thousands of people have already worked through. This one does not exist until you ask for it. New puzzle rebuilds the board in place without reloading the page, and each rebuild is a fresh generation: a complete grid made from scratch, then digits removed one at a time with the solution counted after every removal so that exactly one answer survives. Print, press, print, and you have a stack of unrelated puzzles for a journey or a waiting room. Nobody else has these particular grids, because they were not taken from a library – they were built in your browser a moment before you printed them.
The lines are borders, and the givens are bold
Two details that decide whether a printed grid is usable. The rules dividing the cells and the heavier lines marking the three-by-three boxes are drawn as borders rather than as blocks of colour, so they survive a printer or a browser setting that drops background graphics – the usual reason a printed grid arrives as bare numbers with no lines around them. And the starting digits are set in bold, so on a black-and-white printout they stay visibly different from whatever you write in yourself.
What you give up on paper
Everything the screen does for you stops at the printer. There is no Check to confirm the last twenty minutes were sound, no Hint when a grid stalls, and no red cell when a digit contradicts one already written – so a mistake made in the third minute is discovered in the twentieth, with nothing to point at it. That is the traditional experience and it is why pencil matters: write candidates small in the corner of a cell, and be willing to rub out.
One solution matters more when nobody can check
On screen an ambiguous puzzle is annoying. On paper it is unfalsifiable – you finish a grid, it satisfies every rule, and it disagrees with a printed answer key, with no way to tell which of you is wrong. Every board here is put through a solution counter that stops at two before it is drawn, and a grid with a second solution is discarded rather than published. So if a printed sheet from this page leads you into a contradiction, the contradiction came from a move you made, and the grid can be recovered by finding it.
